Dear Leslie
I am a descendant of the Mills family of Roscommon (who were apparently of Headford, Galway in the late 17th/early 18th century). They had estates at Fairymount, Knockhall, Mount Pleasant and Cherryfield in County Roscommon.
The eldest son of Oliver Mills (of this family), b. approx 1689, was named Robert.
I was wondering whether you knew of any possible link between this Mills family and that of Robert Mills of Fermoyle, Rathcleene, Longford, Gentleman, listed in the Irish census of 1659.
I was also wondering whether you knew anything about the basis of the claim to arms by Mills of Clooneen, Longford as per the following:
Crest: A lion rampant, holding in his mouth a sinister hand Arms: Ermine, a millrind sable, a chief or Motto: "Labor omnia vincit" Underneath this Tomb are deposited the Remains of James Mills of Clooneen who Died in May 1784 aged 44 years, his Beloved wife Anne alias Hill died in August 1804 aged 60 yrs etc.
SOURCE: TAGHSHINNY CHURCHYARD, CO. LONGFORD - Journal of the Association for the Preservation of the Memorials of the Dead in Ireland. Vol. 6.
I note that these arms appear to be the same or similiar to those of Mills/Mill/Milles/Myll/Mylles of Harscomb, Gloucestershire.
Many thanks
Lachlan Williams Auckland, New Zealand
